Class ex1- My cat is starving

This is the newest version, I  just re-uploaded this new soundtrack. The previous version got some problems.

My cat is staring and calling for me to feed her. At the first, I am still working on my own stuff. But then she yells harder and harder, so I feed her finally. And the sound ends with her eating voices.

Class ex2- On my way

Conversation, background noises, and facilities sounds are the main component of this video. Starting from the point I leave my house, I have to hear sounds that I "force"  to. It's also interesting that different languages could be heard from daily activities, it is the feature of Hong Kong.

Class ex3. Finding childhood

I recorded the sounds from a park on a hill, it is called Lam Tin Park, a hill from my backyard. I love hiking there with my parents when I was young, I had a lot of great memories in the park. Making sounds through the facilities of the playground was a great amusement for me, I just feel it was fun. When I grew up, this little enjoyment was almost forgotten, I also didn’t enter the playground anymore. On the day I recorded for this ambisonics piece, I found that the facilities are no longer the same, many new types of equipment were built. So I tried on them randomly like a child and created a composition following my heart.

During my editing, I intend to make the sounds move around and come from different directions.

I wish multiple layers could be heard from my composition.

In the master track, I put on Energy Visualizer to check my sound’s position.

Class excercises 1 -FM broadcasting exercise

IMG_1619.HEIC

In this group project, I  work with Bibiana and Krystal. We used my soundtrack "Finding childhood" to broadcast, and we did a performance to follow the sounds of radio using our environment. In the beginning, I heard the sound of children running around, so I ran around in the classroom. This action is also an opening to telling our audience what we are going to do. Then, we started our searching process to find the right material and action, in order to produce the sound we heard.

We believed the properties of radio is to transfer information and contents to listeners, so we would like to explore another way that how sound would interact with the audience.  I would also see our work as a performative installation in which the audience needs to participate.

Class excercises 2 - Sound Sculpture

In this soundtrack, I record the sound of the entire performance of the whole class. It is about 14 minutes.

You can start listening at 0.32 sec.

Group mate: Bibiana and Krystal

In this sound performance, me and my groupmate are exploring the different possibility of sound created, the duration is about 3 minutes. As we have three people, we can combine three different sounds together to form a special rhythm and beat. I am making sound mostly in the left corner, with cardboard and a rock. I also walk around to experiment with the sound changes with interact to the environment in a spatial. In the beginning, I  used cardboard to hit the floor, Bibibian was making sound by throwing a metal spring ring on the ground. Krystal is rolling a long shape rock on the metal shelf and table.

Then, I was using the rock to scrape the metal shelf and my cardboard, I also picked up a long plastic tube to form noises through rapping the floor. In the second part of our performance, I keep using my rock to explore the environment such as the wall, window, floor, and chimney. Bibiana used another object- an umbrella to make sounds by the action of open and close, also rapping the floor.

We name our piece untitled as we didn't have any intention, we just randomly made sounds that we want to. Before the performance, we picked our favorite objects and we discuss sounds that we like. I  would explain our performance as we keep finding ways to express sounds that we enjoy making. Just like what David Tudor stated.

Class excercises 3 - Sound making experiments and scores

We did this exercise together with the whole class, everyone is holding two rocks. At first, we made sounds inside the classroom, walking around, and also form a circle. Then someone wanted to try on the echo effect in the back stairs, at last, we all went there one by one.

At last, we try on the three exercises from NOISE-SILENCE by Pauline Oliveros. We just simply use our mouth to make noise, and then do nothing and stop talking to keep a silence.

This is my favorite part of the sound-making experiment.

I can feel the tacitly behind sound during the practice, just like a secret agreement between all of us.
